And now, for the best and worst of pop punk

Artist: Green Day
Album: American Idiot
Rating: 9/10
You May Have Heard: American Idiot, Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Holiday
Recommended: Letterbomb
Fan Success: Yes it's true. The multi-platinum sensations are making the biggest splash on the charts since Dookie came out a decade ago. It was also well-timed releasing it in an election year.
Artistic Success: You can't help but agree with the masses on this one. Goodness knows how many people took the time to listen to the album from start to finish, seeing as the album contains two 5 part songs each lasting about 10 minutes long. Yet in addition to the multi-tiered "rock opera" tracks (as the term seems to be going), and in addition to the 3-4 chord singles, a great deal of the restraint of their last album Warning is present, which, if it was lacking, may not have given the album the edge it needed to round off the listen.

Artist: Good Charlotte
Album: The Chronicles of Life and Death
Rating: 1/10
You May Have Heard: Predictable, I Just Wanna Live
Recommended: N/A
Fan Success: Not so far, at least not to the extent of their previous hit The Young and the Hopeless. The lack of identity on the album probably confused fans.
Artistic Success: This is my selection for the worst album of 2004. I will perhaps listen to it every now and then, as I do not cringe when I hear the band. However, being able to listen to the album will never make it good, as Good Charlotte seems to have forgotten how to be whimsical and free-flowing in their unsuccessful attempts to rip off other styles of punk rock. It's as if they put the Warped Tour in the blender and forgot to hit "blend".

(so, if you're not listening to that...)

Artist: Denver Harbor
Album: Scenic
Rating: 10/10
You May Have Heard: Picture-Perfect Wannabe
Recommended: Satisfied
Fan Success: Low and mixed. The main question on the fans minds was, is this going to be another Fenix TX? Fortunately, and unfortunately, the answer was "Yeah, kinda." Denver Harbor will probably go (undeservedly) ignored by the masses.
Artistic Success: In my opinion, Will Salazar has outdone his previous Fenix TX work, which was no easy task. Reminiscent of some of the better moments of The Offspring, Scenic already well surpasses even the longest running Drive-Thru veterans in terms of cohesion and delivery. It will prompt you to sing along before you've listened to the album more than once, and the guitar riffs have rendered themselves nothing less than delicious.
